Thenga
Thenga was established on 29th August 2019, with an aim to be a social enterprise that manufacture and sell eco friendly products . The name ‘Thenga’ means coconut in Malayalam, since coconuts were plenty in Kerala we wanted to promote coconut
related products. Usually coconut water, flesh etc. are utilized to make oil, coconut milk that is considered valuable in the market. Coconut shells are used for burning, or thrown away, thus reducing its value. We wanted to change this scenario and started manufacturing coconut bowls. We now focus on coconut shell related products, like bowls, coconut cutlery, coconut planter etc and a few other eco friendly products.

The company was founded by me, Maria Kuriakose from Thrissur, Kerala. My mother and sister supports me in this venture. We initially started by manufacturing on our own in a small unit, near our home. But when number of orders started to increase, our capacity was not sufficient. We realized that there are many small coconut shell craftsmen in different parts of Kerala, who have taken training from the Kerala state handicraft Cooperative, but only make a small living due to limited orders or
take up alternative work as labourers. Now we take most of our bowls and cutlery from craftsmen in different areas of Kerala – Kottayam, Kodungallur, Mettupalayam, Alappey etc. Today we are not only able to provide them a stable income, but also help them continue their passion for coconut shell art and craft.

We package the products using old newspapers and cardboard boxes. We do so to avoid plastics and other non biodegradable material, this helps us stay true to our mission to create products for a sustainable world.
