Terracotta translates from Latin as ‘burnt earth’ and is a type of clay-based ceramic or earthenware material that has been used for sculpture, pottery and architectural purposes by many civilisations. The terracotta army is one of the biggest and most popular exhibits of terracotta sculpture. The terracotta army depicted the forces of Qin Shi Huang, the 1st emperor of the country. It went along as a protective contingent with the emperor’s burial during the period 210–209 BC, with the
notion that the army would protect the emperor post his death. In ancient times tribals used to say a small prayer before digging into the earth and creating terracotta to ask for forgiveness for killing the microscopic and insect life forms in the process. In today’s world, humans are rapidly moving towards modernisation with scant regard for the side effects caused to the planet. Arundhati Badhe was always fascinated with nature and its environment. She has always had an inclination towards working with nature and its elements. She took up Fine arts in ceramics & pottery from a reputed sir to take her passion forward. J.J. School of Arts, where she first encountered terracotta. During her campus days, she used to love to experiment and create different artefacts’ with terracotta. Over the years, she continued experimenting with terracotta to create unique art & craft forms. Taking her experiences forward, she decided to introduce the magic of terracotta to the world by launching “Trance Terra”. “Trance Terra” was born out of the passion for reshaping mother earth to bring modern man closer to nature, his true mother, once again. Arundhati had once trained over 100 tribals in pottery, and its impact on their lives made her believe that it was time to give back something to the community. Taking that thought forward, she decided to open up her factory in rural India and work with the Warli tribe and help them learn and generate income as well. Trance Terra is a community amalgamating ancient tools and techniques with modernised machines and the human touch to create magic. Terracotta has the potential to be shaped and moulded in different ways to create many categories of products, from lighting, cooking, tableware, decorative & artefacts’, sculptures, jewellery, pet-friendly homes, and more. Driven by contemporary design and a human-centric approach, her team works to create functional art to complement modern lifestyles.
